Job Description:

We have an urgent need to employ a full-time Priest (Religious Worker) to work with our existing team of priests and the management committee. Ordained Hindu Priests (of a Brahmin lineage) undertake specific duties in support of the senior priests and the religious activities related to our method/form of worship.

The successful individual will be qualified to; have in-depth knowledge, expertise and experience of conducting traditional Hindu ceremonies both within the temple and off-site where required. They will have a well-established background and proven experience in undertaking the duties listed below.

  • Conduct and lead traditional Hindu ceremonies (including daily poojas, abishekham, homum and other similar ceremonies) – essential for this role
  • Setup Abishekham, Homum and Pooja / preparation for daily and special ceremonies
  • Alangaram – decoration to all Deities
  • Archanai – Conduct personal ceremonies of dedication
  • Chanting of traditional mantras and texts
  • Other associated duties

Prerequisites:

  • Must be Ordained/conferred to Kurukkkalship (Vedaagamas)
  • Must be able to perform basic traditional ceremonies without direction or supervision from a senior priest
  • Must be able to recite/chant vedic mantra’s and Slokas
  • Must have 2+ years’ experience working at a Saiva Hindu Temple
  • Must have strong communication skills and be able to converse in Tamil
  • Should be willing and committed to learn English as part of their personal development

As a condition of your employment, you will be required to reside within the vicinity of the temple premises (in accommodation provided by us).

Job Description:

  • Waking up and tending to the Deities and carrying out their daily rituals such as pooja, daily bathing and alangaram (dressing).
  • Chanting of traditional sanskrit mantras and texts.
  • Ensure that the deities and the altars are kept clean and tidy at all times.
  • Keeping tidy and arranging on a daily basis the cupboards used to store deities’ clothing, pooja items, etc
  • Other associated duties.

None of the rituals, rites, poojas etc that are performed by you in our temple involves any preaching or leading a congregation with prayers etc.

Skills:

  • Ordained/conferred to Kurukkkalship (Vedaagamas)
  • Brahmin lineage.
  • Able to recite/chant basic Vedic mantra’s and Slokas to the Deities.
  • Be able to converse fluently in Tamil
  • Be willing to learn English as part of their personal development
  • Recognised training, acceptable to the selection panel, in the Hindu Vedas and
    Agamas to enable the carrying out of the Religious workers duties.
